KADN is reporting that an arrest has been made after a hit-and-run crash happened early Sunday morning that sent the victim to the hospital in critical condition.

Lafayette Police have arrested 26-year-old Aunjane Sims of New Iberia on one count of hit and run.

Police officials say the pedestrian stepped into the lane of traffic and was hit early Sunday morning.

Officials with the Lafayette Police Department are asking for the public's help in finding the person responsible for hitting a pedestrian.

The driver fled the scene of the fatal crash.

Sergeant Robin Green with the Lafayette Police Department said via a press release they are asking anyone who might know anything about what happened or anyone who might have seen someone to contact them.

Green says the woman, for unknown reasons, was crossing the southbound lanes of travel and was hit by the driver.

The driver was traveling in the inside southbound lane in the 500 block of the Thruway when they struck the person and took off.

Officials with the Lafayette Police Department are still investigating after a person was hit by a car that fled in the 500 block of the Southwest Evangeline Thruway early Sunday morning.

Sergeant Robin Green, spokeswoman for the Lafayette Police Department, says the hit-and-run crash happened at around 1:59 Sunday morning. The person who hit the pedestrian fled the scene.

The victim is listed in critical condition at an area hospital.

Investigators will provide more information to the public about what happened as the details of the tragic event are learned.

The area of the Southwest Evangeline Thruway where this happened on the way to Eigjht Street was blocked off for some time as the investigation proceeded.

Green says they do not know at this time what vehicle may have been involved in this crash, but as details become available they will be released.

Unfortunately, over the last few years, many areas in Acadiana have been plagued by vehicle and pedestrian accidents. There have been several hit-and-run situations over the past year in our area.

In October of 2023, Joan Aragon Brown of Abbeville was struck and killed in the 1300 of Willow Street after a hit-and-run crash.

Also in October of 2023, a Duson person was killed after a hit-and-run crash that happened on Toby Mouton Road.

In Abbeville on Halloween night 2023, a man was taken to a trauma center after being hit by a vehicle and police said at the time that a hit-and-run that happened earlier could have also been related.

As you can see, several incidents have happened in recent months where police have been working diligently to catch the people responsible for these crimes.
