A Salute to The Woman Who Assisted an Elderly Woman in New Iberia Parking Lot

(New Iberia, Louisiana) - Storms moved through much of Acadiana on Monday, and one elderly woman braved the elements until someone came to her aid.

As you may have heard, we've teamed up with Vitalant once again this year for their annual "Race Against The Clock" blood drive, and we kicked off the drive at Rouses in New Iberia.

While I was preparing for our broadcast from the grocery store parking lot, storms were slowly moving out of the area just in time for us to start, but the rain was still coming down pretty hard. That's when something caught my eye in the parking lot.

I noticed an elderly woman, probably in her mid-to-late 80s, walking towards the store entrance as rain fell, and someone else was approaching her. A young lady who had removed her shoes so they wouldn't get wet walked over to the elderly woman with an umbrella, and they began talking.

I could see the elderly woman shaking her head no, but the young lady with an open umbrella continued talking. After a few seconds into their conversation, I realized what was happening in front of me.

How to Assist Elderly People

The young lady was convincing the elderly woman that she wanted to shield her from the rain and walk her to the store. Well, apparently, the young lady in the parking lot is a "good talker" because the elderly woman gave in and let her walk her to the store entrance, while holding the umbrella over her.

I lost sight of them once they entered the store, and as I continued on with my duties at the site of my broadcast, I kept thinking how kind it was of the young lady to go out of her way to help someone who was having trouble walking across a wet parking lot.

Too often, we see the worst in people on social media, which is why I have chosen to share this story with you. There are still so many good people out there willing to assist others, and I hope that the young lady who held her umbrella over this elderly woman sees this.

Somewhere along the way, she was taught right, and she did what I hope many others would do if they saw an elderly person walking in the rain. Stop and help someone who could use a helping hand.

I'll end with this: as dreary as the day may have been because of the rain showers, what this young lady did in New Iberia sure brightened my day and that of the elderly woman. Job well done to that young lady at Rouses, and I hope that more people extend their generosity as you did on this day.
