The Polyester Power Hour lost a long time friend this week. Helen 'Lady D' Darby, a Special Ed teacher in St. Martinville, passed away on Monday. She was diagnosed with cancer just a month ago. Helen's voice and laugh were such a pleasure to hear when she called us on Friday mornings. She was always so upbeat and positive. I had spoken to her last just a couple of weeks ago and had no idea what struggles she was facing. She leaves behind a beloved daughter, her loving mother and many, many friends who were impacted in a beautiful way by her kind and fun spirit.

Helen's friends have come together to help her family with funeral expenses. They're planning a benefit dance Friday night, June 27, 2014 at The Ole Folks in St. Martinville and they have set up a YouCaring account for online donations. As of this morning, they'd raised $1255 of their $5000 goal. If you'd like to help with a monetary contribution, click here.

[UPDATE] A benefit plate lunch will be offered today (6/27/14) at Floyd's Place on Main St. in St. Martinville from 10AM - till. Plates are $7.00 and will include deep fried chicken, corn bread, red beans & rice.

RIP, Helen. I know the angels were singing 'Kung Fu Fighting' when you arrived in Heaven, but we're still going to play it for you tomorrow!
