There is a commercial that is floating around the internet, titled "Unsung Hero", featuring an Asian man doing good deeds for people, and it really caught my attention.

The video starts out innocently enough, with water dripping on to the man's head, so he moves a dry potted plant under the flow.  Then, he does a series of good deeds, almost ritually.

The message is clear:  you shouldn't do good things in hope for something in return.  Do them to do good.  Do them because you are able to do them.  I have never heard of anyone going broke from doing good things or donating to charity.

I saw this list posted on a friend's Facebook page tonight, and it is a pretty good list:

1. Compliment three people every day.
2. Watch a sunrise at least once a year.
3. Be the first to say hello.
4. Live beneath your means.
5. Forget the Jones.
6. Treat everyone like you want to be treated.
7. Never give up on anyone. Miracles happen.
8. Never deprive anyone of hope. It may be all that he/she has.
9. Pray not for things, but for wisdom and courage.
10. Be tough minded but tender hearted.
11. Don't forget a person's greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.
12. Keep your promises.
13. Learn to show cheerfulness, even when you don't feel like it.
14. Remember that overnight success usually takes 15 years.
15. Leave everything better than you found it.
16. Remember that winners do what losers don't want to do.
17. When you arrive at your job first thing in the morning, let the first thing
you say brighten everyone's day.
18. Don't rain on other people's parades.
19. Never waste an opportunity to tell someone you love them.

Do good.  Do good for you, do good for others, do good for the world.
