Why are some people afraid of clowns?  A clown makes most of us laugh.  How is it that one costumed individual can bring so much joy to some and cause others tremendous discomfort?

I know several people who are deathly afraid of clowns, I bet you know a few as well.  What is it?  What is it about a person in makeup and colorful clothing that makes the likes of small children laugh hysterically and many adults want to run for their lives?

I am petrified of those black and red grasshoppers.  Someone told me once, they are a biblical entity and I should try to embrace them.  To hell with that.  I believe those things come from the pits of hell.  However, to me, an insect and a clown are two very different things.  Those big black grasshoppers look evil, a clown, not so much.

So help those of us who are okay around clowns, understand being afraid of them.  What is it exactly?
