Sixties Pop Icon Davy Jones Dies
Davy Jones, of the "manufactured" pop group The Monkees died of a heart attack today. He was 66. The Monkees were the brainchild of the legendary music mogul, Don Kirshner. They were formed for the purpose of a TV show about an imaginary pop group, but had Chart-topping hits with songs written for them by such legends as Neil Diamond & Carole King, as well as the songwriting team of Boyce and Hart. Stephen Stills, of Crosby, Stills & Nash and Charles Manson both auditioned for the part eventually given to Michael Nesmith.
