Crawfish Exit Pond and Cover Roadway in Acadiana
(KTDY) - A driver in Acadiana recorded what appears to be thousands of crawfish on a roadway, and many were left asking where this was recorded.
While this may not be uncommon for some to see in the countryside, it is still quite astounding to see so many crawfish on the move
Parish Foods LLLC shared a video of the crawfish on the move, and while they didn't give an exact location, the brand noted that where they saw the crawfish on the road wasn't far from their location in Rayne.
Why Do Crawfish Exit Ponds
Crawfish are known to migrate away from ponds that they are in for a few reasons. One, crawfish will often leave the pond they are in when oxygen levels are low or when the water level changes drastically.
In addition, crawfish will also leave a pond when they are looking for a new food source, mainly due to overcrowding. Some species will also relocate for breeding purposes.
When the video below was originally posted, there was a drastic temperature change, and we received quite a bit of rainfall in the area, which could have contributed to changes in the ponds' water levels.
Can You Pick Crawfish Up From The Road?
According to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, you must have a basic recreational fishing license here to harvest crawfish if you're 18 years or older.
That means if you are harvesting crawfish by net or by hand and you're 18 or older, you must have a license to pick up the crawfish that may be on a Louisiana roadway.

Now, let's take a look at A LOT of crawfish on the move, from somewhere in Acadia Parish. Now, as tempting as it may be to stop and pick up crawfish that may be on the road, we remind you that it is never safe to exit your vehicle to retrieve anything from a road.
Please never put yourself or others at risk by picking anything up from the road.
