Louisiana Cajun Navy Shares Important Reminder About Potential Threat in Yard
(KTDY) - Fall is approaching, and many of us are back outdoors enjoying our yards, but there is one potential danger lurking in our yards.
Not only are many of us enjoying time on the patio as kids play outside, but many are also cleaning up the yard as summer comes to an end.
However, there's more in your yard than broken tree limbs and hummingbirds for September. The Louisiana Cajun Navy recently shared a great reminder on social media, featuring a photo of a small snake.
The reminder is that September marks the start of not only football season, but also the birth of copperheads.
Copperhead snakes can give birth to many snakes at once; thus, if you see one in your yard, chances are there are more nearby.
Where Do Copperhead Snakes Hide
Copperhead snakes are often found under leaves, wood piles, brush piles, or in tall grass. You may also see small copperhead snakes under toys that kids leave out in the yard.
Small copperhead snakes will also hide under porches or steps, where they can prey on rodents.
One way to keep copperhead snakes away is to keep your yard clean and rodent-free.
What To Do If A Copperhead Snake Bites You
If you encounter a copperhead snake in your yard and are bitten by one, you should get away from the snake and seek medical attention immediately. While the bite may not be fatal, it can be excruciating.
Plus, you should wash the wound with warm, soapy water. Elevate the limb that the snake bit to the level of your heart, and immobilize the limb.
Remember to stay calm, as you don't want to increase your heart rate, which could further spread the venom throughout your body.
Here's the social media post by the Louisiana Cajun Navy reminding all of us that small copperhead snakes could be present in our yards as we approach the end of summer.
Take a look at a copperhead's nest, along with its baby snakes. And no, we never want to see this in our yard.
