55 years ago - In 1965, The Astrodome opened. The Astros played the Yankees in an exhibition game. Astronauts, political figures, etc. watched an exhibition game between the Astros and the Yankees. Mickey Mantle hit the stadium's first home run in front of a sold-out crowd of 47,879. When it opened it had a three-story apartment, an indoor chapel, a beauty salon and bowling alley. To this day the Astrodome is the largest domed building with unobstructed views.
