You think that one of the biggest televised events in the world would have a major entertainment budget for their featured half time performers. But, no. Super Bowl artists get paid NOTHING from the NFL. And considering that up until 2015 the league was considered an unincorporated nonprofit 501, we're not surprised.

This year, with the 54th big game being played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday, February 2, the half time show will be performed by Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. This is the first year that rapper Jay-Z has partnered with the NFL in an entertainment capacity, and expectations have been sky high.

According to cheatsheet.com, NFL spokesperson Joanna Hunter previously explained to Forbes, 'We do not pay the artists. We cover expenses and production costs'. And NFL Director of Programming Lawrence Randall told Time 'We’re putting someone up there for 12 and a half minutes in front of the largest audience that any television program garners in the United States, It’s a pretty good deal. It’s the famous win-win for both parties'. Except that the artists don't get paid. And just think of all the amazing superstars who have taken the stage in years past, and not gotten a dime - Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars. Unbelievable.

Maybe we should ask the players and coaches to perform for free too, since it's such a 'win-win'. Just sayin'. You can watch the 49ers play the Chiefs in Super Bowl 54 on Sunday, February 2nd at 5:30 CST on the FOX Network.
