If you own a pet, you already know how excited they can be when you gift them a new toy, but one veterinarian is warning pet owners to avoid giving their dog one particular toy.

Like a human, when pets have a new toy in their possession, it can be gratifying, but like toys for you and me, some can be dangerous.

Even if a toy for your pet is not toxic or does not have removable parts, a toy can still pose a danger and one pet owner found that out after gifting their dog rope toy.

According to The Animal Rescue Site, a veterinarian said he had to treat a small puppy after it ate part of the rope. Unfortunately, the piece of rope got into the pup's small intestine and required surgery.

The puppy that digested the piece of rope had 70 percent of its intestine removed and the procedure left it in critical condition and left the pet owner with a steep vet bill.

Dr. Sheldon Steinmetz told The Animal Rescue Site:

"This is one of the most devastating things that a dog can swallow. Once the strand of rope gets into the small intestine, it is almost impossible for it to pass naturally. I would say that he had a 15 percent chance of survival due to how sick he was and the damage that had been done."

So, before you gift your pet a new toy, you are encouraged to consult with your veterinarian about the make and size of it. Dogs of various sizes can play with toys of various sizes and it's best to seek the opinion of a veterinarian before handing any toy over to your fur baby.
