Sandbag Locations Announced as Acadiana Prepares for Tropical Storm Gordon

As Tropical Storm Gordon begins its expected path through Florida and the Gulf Coast, emergency personnel in the Acadiana region are preparing for the potentially heavy rain associated with the storm. Gordon is expected to reach the Louisiana-Mississippi coast early Wednesday morning.

LAFAYETTE PARISH

Lafayette Consolidated Government’s (LCG) Department of Public Works operates two sandbag stations for Lafayette Parish residents.

• LCG Compost Facility, located at 400 N Dugas Rd., off North University Ave. (permanent, regular sandbag site)
• South District sandbag site, located at 1017 Fortune Rd. in Youngsville (permanent, regular sandbag site)

Sandbags are available at both sites 24 hours a day.

The sites are "self-bagging," meaning the bags and sand are provided to Lafayette Parish residents free, at no charge, but residents will need to supply their own manpower and shovel. Residents are asked to limit their sandbags to four bags per exterior door, with a maximum of 20 sandbags per household.

ACADIA PARISH

• All parish barns are now open until 5:00 p.m. Monday for sand bags. The parish barns are located in Iota, Branch and Crowley.

City of Crowley

• Will begin providing sand bags Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. at the Public Works Building.

City of Rayne

• Officials are currently monitoring the weather as well as the drainage. They will open if the need arises.

Be prepared to show identification.

IBERIA PARISH

Sand and bags will be available to residents at the following locations:

• B.O.M. Fire Station
• Grand Marais Fire Station
• Coteau Fire Station
• Delcambre City Barn
• Loreauville Park
• Jeanerette Fire Dept., Church St. location;  Fire Dept. personnel will assist elderly or disabled citizens

Residents must bring their own shovels to fill the bags.

ST. LANDRY PARISH

Sand and bags will be available to residents at the following locations:

• Yambilee Building on W. Landry Street in Opelousas
• Northwest Community Center Pavilion on Samuel Dr. in Eunice

The 2 sites open at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Residents must bring a shovel and fill their own sandbags.
