In 1963, a little known band of teenagers recorded a cover version of a song written by Richard Berry in 1957. They called themselves The Kingsmen. The song was "Louie, Louie." When they heard the finished product, they were outraged at paying the $50.00 recording fee. The group's lead singer, Jack Ely, quit the group before it became a hit to pursue his education. The lyrics were largely unintelligible, and rumored to be obscene. There was even an FBI investigation, and some radio stations banned the song.  It's now widely considered one of the classic "party songs" of all time. There are more than 1,000 recordings of "Louie, Louie." Ely moved to Oregon, and became a horse trainer. USA Today reports, he died Tuesday, of an unspecified illness, at his home in Redmond Oregon. Jack Ely was 71.
