An employee in the maintenance department at Bridgeway Apartments II on Dulles Drive may have saved the life of a puppy who was trapped inside an apartment that was filling up with smoke.

In a press release, Lafayette firefighters say they got the call from the employee around 2:23 p.m. after he heard the smoke alarm while he was working in a unit next door. Once he went inside the apartment, he says he could see smoke coming from a bedroom. Fortunately, the tenants were not home.

But a puppy was. The dog escaped uninjured after the worker opened the bedroom door.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the bedroom, mainly confining it to the bed and mattress. The other rooms did sustain minor smoke damage.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
