Why the Mammosine Tradition Matters for Women’s Health in Louisiana

(99.9 KTDY) - The mammosine, a tradition in Acadiana, rolled again with contest winners and their guests, to Ochsner Lafayette General Breast Center for a yearly mammogram.

The mammosine is a public awareness campaign that began 18 years ago as a gentle reminder to women that mammograms save lives. Early detection is key in helping to treat breast cancer, and unfortunately, not enough women take the time to have one.

Women prioritize their families over their own health, and the Mammosine is a way to remember how important a few minutes of life can be. We hope every woman reading this will make an appointment for a mammogram.

This year, the Mammosine was an excellent trolley from Geaux Out, and we loaded up multiple winners and their guests. A huge "Thank You" to the company and our excellent driver, Kevin. He was sweet, kind, funny, and he treated us like we were royalty!

Inside the trolley, we had a hilarious round of breast cancer awareness trivia that seemed counterintuitive but was anything but. Giving information helps to dispel some of the myths surrounding breast cancer and mammography.

We were greeted by the manager of the Ochsner Lafayette General Breast Center, Dana, who, along with her staff, helped us complete our yearly mammograms. Ochsner Lafayette General Breast Center has the calmest mammography environment I've ever experienced. The staff is kind and makes you feel as if you have known them forever. It's an easy and actually relaxing process.

After the mammograms, we hopped back on our trolley to play more games and then head over to Prejean's in Carencro for a spectacular lunch.

The folks at Prejean's let the ladies order whatever they wanted, and the entire table had impressive food. The food was cooked perfectly, and the portions were very generous.

The ladies were each given a bag full of gifts from 1 Tom Plumber, including the coolest, most durable plunger any woman—or man, for that matter—would want! These folks support us each year because they want women to know that you need to make time for a mammogram—they save lives.
