Louisiana has just surpassed Qatar and is now 5th in the world for the number of new coronavirus cases per million residents.

In a chart posted to today's New York Times, Louisiana is listed as having approximately 2,000 new cases of COVID-19 per million residents, trailing 4th place Bahrain by a mere 200 patients. The top 3 locations in the world for new coronavirus infections include Arizona, Florida, and South Carolina.

Though the number of new cases is on the rise, the number of deaths due to COVID-19 remains relatively flat. Experts warn that this could be from a lag associated with reporting, combined with the amount of time it takes a patient to succumb to the virus. Many believe that a rise in the death rate may soon follow.

The Centers for Disease Control is still recommending that people keep their social distance, wear face masks that cover the mouth and nose, wash hands thoroughly and often, limit exposure, and use hand sanitizer.
