Louisiana is a 2nd Amendment state. For many of the state's residents the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. The state has recently passed laws that allow for what is commonly known as "Constitutional Carry". In other words, if you're legally allowed to own a gun then you're legally allowed to carry that firearm.

There are some that disagree with this position and policy but the wishes of the people were respected by the Louisiana Legislature and the motions have been vetted, passed, and signed. Still, that begs the question, "What would disqualify you from owning a gun in Louisiana"?

Speaking purely from a common sense point of view you would think the ability to operate the weapon in a safe and controlled manner would be at the top of the list. But it's not. The ability to operate a firearm in a safe and controlled manner isn't even listed.

Weapons restrictions in Louisiana are only enforced on those who have broken the law in the commission of certain types of crimes. The state's laws are very similar to federal laws which prohibit those convicted of felonies or certain domestic abuse crimes from possessing or purchasing a firearm.

Is It Legal to Sell a Blind Person a Firearm in Louisiana?

The short answer is "Yes".  Just because an individual may have issues with their ability to see does not preclude their Constitutional rights as an American. In many states not only are visually impaired individuals allowed to own weapons, they may carry a weapon if they can pass a shooting test.

All individuals, visually impaired or not, are subject to federal and state laws regarding waiting periods and background checks. You must also meet certain age requirements and depending on the firearm you're interested in purchasing, you might be required to obtain specific permits.

Many shooting ranges offer those who are visually impaired the opportunity to learn more about gun safety and proper shooting techniques. By using a permitted assistant the visually impaired shooter can actually master the craft of aiming and shooting regardless of the amount of sight they have.

According to the International Blind Sports Federation, visually impaired shooters can even compete in shooting competitions. The equipment that is used is often modified with an electronic aiming device that provides the shooter information through a headset that directs them to the target.

It's fascinating to watch these individuals work through and beyond an impairment that might limit others in their enjoyment of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It's another bit of verbiage that we in Louisiana hold quite dearly.

And while we totally support your rights as an American to keep and bear arms we do encourage you to get proper training with your firearms. Whether it's a handgun, a shotgun, a rifle, or any weapon the more you know the better steward you become of your rights as an American.

And one other thing if we may, please practice gun safety all the time. It's not just when you're in the field or at the range. Keep your weapons and ammunition safely secured from children. Keep those weapons maintained and in good working order. As they say, take care of that weapon and it will take care of you.
