Derelict Crab Trap Rodeo Is A Real Thing And They Need Your Boat

The 2015 Derelict Crab Trap Rodeo will take place Saturday, February 21 from 8 AM to 3 PM at the Johnson’s Bayou boat launch located off of Highway 563 on Deep Bayou Road in Cameron Parish.

Hosted by The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the event addresses the removal of derelict and abandoned crab traps.  Removal of these traps improves quality of life for blue crabs and other accidentally trapped species, removes navigational hazards, and increases the visual appeal of the local environment.

The volunteer-based program is funded through commercial fishermen gear fees and has disposed of more than 24,000 derelict crab traps since its inception. Click here for full details on the event.
