Why can't I feel comfortable holding a door open for a lady anymore.  Is chivalry dead?

I was brought up to hold a door open for a lady.  Not because females are a weaker sex, more out of respect.  But these days, some women get offended.  And as a guy, I get embarrassed when a woman says, "No thank you, I got it".

I like holding a door open for a lady.  I also like to give a female a compliment.  These days, I don't do that as much due to fear of being reprimanded or having to visit with Human Resources.  I think that's sad.
