Most Americans don't get enough sleep. Seven or eight hours per night is widely recommended. Many of us fall short of that. Sleep is essential to good health, and longevity. The human body does its "repair work" during sleep time. The Washington Post reports, a study in Sweden found that compensating for insufficient sleep during the work week by sleeping in on weekends can help prolong your life. Torbjorn Akerstedt is the director of the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University. They followed the progress of 38,000 subjects over a 13 year period. Research indicated people who consistently sleep fewer than 7 hours a night live shorter lives, but those who compensate by sleeping in live as long as those who consistently get the recommended amount of sleep. I sleep in on weekends. Looks like I'll live a long time.
