The National Hurricane Center has confirmed Tropical Depression 3 has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and could impact the Gulf Coast this weekend.

The National Hurricane Center expects Tropical Depression 3 to become Tropical Storm Cristobal over the next 24 hours.

Tropical Storm Cristobal is expected to have gusts up to 60mph by Saturday or early next week. The National Hurricane Center is asking people along the Gulf Coast between Texas and Florida to stay alert as the storm could turn northward by the weekend or early next week with, "gradual intensification".

Different storm models have the storm intensifying to fizzing out before making landfall. With storms that occur this early in the season, there are always risks for heavy rain and flooding especially on the East side of the system.

Tropical Storm Cristobal's path is not etched into stone at this hour, we'll have to keep an eye on this one.
