Today is International Women’s Day
Here’s to strong women. Today is International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the amazing women in your life. Yes, every day women should be celebrated, but on March 8th you have an extra special reason to show women they are appreciated.

International Women’s Day is March 8th every year and it’s a global day to encourage everyone to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness about women’s equality, and support taking action against gender inequality around the world. This world couldn’t run without women and today is the day that organizations come together to show women how valuable they are in today’s society.
How did International Women’s Day get started? According to National Today, in the early 1900s, women were experiencing pay inequality, a lack of voting rights, and they were being overworked. In response to all of this, 15,000 women marched in through New York City in 1908 to demand their rights. In 1909, the first National Women’s Day was observed. This was celebrated on the last Sunday of February until 1913. According to Real Simple, after several years, more countries marked the holiday on March 8. It wasn’t until March 8, 1975, when, during International Women’s Year, the United Nations celebrated it as an official holiday. Since 1975, the holiday has gained awareness around the globe as a way to recognize women.
How can you celebrate IWD? There are plenty of ways to embrace the day, from supporting woman-owned businesses, sending the women in your life International Women’s Day quotes and messages, and sending flowers are just a few ways to show women they are appreciated.
I love that every year there is a different theme for IWD. The theme for 2021 is #ChooseToChallenge, which highlights the importance of challenging biases and misconceptions in the interest of creating a more inclusive and gender-equal world.
Use the theme hashtag #ChooseToChallenge to show support for all women today. Other hashtags you can use are: #WomensDay, #IWD2021, #InternationalWomensDay, and #SeeHer.
