Earlier this year we brought you a story about the Mars Corporation offering to give out a million free Snickers candy bars if Halloween was permanently moved to the last Saturday in October. A Change.org petition was set up, and now the folks that are behind the movement are saying that instead of changing the date of Halloween, how about just adding an extra day of festivities for families to celebrate.

National Trick or Treat Day is sponsored by the Halloween and Costume Association in conjunction with partners like Party City, to add an extra day to the normal festivities, on the last Saturday of October. According to the petition, they want to 'Launch the #ALLoween campaign designed to support the all-day celebration of National Trick or Treat Day AND the time-honored traditions of Halloween on October 31st.This year we will be launching a national initiative designed to enhance the Halloween that we all know and love'.

So far over 150,000 people have signed, and they are sending it to the President of the United States in hopes that it can be reviewed. They also have some sobering statistics about Halloween that we want to pass along below, in order to keep everyone safe when celebrating.

  • There are approximately 3,800 Halloween-related injuries each year
  • 82% of parents don’t use high visibility aids on their costume. Be sure to utilize reflective tape, glow sticks, finger lights or light up accessories so you can be seen
  • 63% of children don’t carry a flashlight while they are trick-or-treating. Get a clip on light, or incorporate it into their costume, even if they put up a fuss about it.
  • 65% of parents don’t discuss Halloween safety with their children. Start talking about it now, y'all.
  • 12% of children 5 and under go trick or treating without the supervision of an adult. Wow. Not cool at all. Or safe.
