Oregon State Mauls LSU
Bryce Fehmel allowed just two hits through eight innings and #1 ranked Oregon State took advantage of eleven walks by LSU pitchers in taking a 13-1 win over the #4 seeded Tigers, sending LSU into the loser's bracket.
Fehmel (6-2) allowed only a single to Zach Watson over the first six innings before Watson homered in the seventh to get LSU on the board. But by that time, the Beavers had opened an 11-0 lead.
Freshman Eric Walker got the start for the Tigers, but had to leave after feeling tightness in his forearm in the third inning. Oregon State got a run off Walker in the first, saddling the freshman with the loss.
Caleb Gilbert came on in relief and gave up a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning following an error by Kramer Robertson. Gilbert gave up four hits in 2.2 innings.
The roof fell in on the Tigers in the sixth, as reliever Nick Bush gave up a pair of walks. Todd Peterson also walked a pair and reliever Hunter Newman gave up a grand slam home run to K. J. Harrison to make the score 8-0. Newman, who had allowed only three earned runs all season, was charged with five runs in one inning of work.
Nick Madrigal, Trevor Larnach and Cadyn Grenier each drove in three runs for OSU as the top four hitters in the lineup accounted for ten RBI.
LSU, which had its seventeen game hitting streak snapped, will face elimination Wednesday in a rematch with Florida State, which eliminated Cal State Fullerton earlier in the day.
