(Lafayette, Louisiana) - No, your eyes were not fooling you on Monday if you looked up and saw a ring around the sun.

Several people took to social media to start the new week to ask why there was a "ring" around the sun, and while many had some very entertaining theories, one local meteorologist gave us the science behind the ring.

Some on social media suggested that the sun finally got engaged, and while that gave me a good laugh to start the week, no, the sun is not getting married anytime soon.

KLFY News 10 Meteorologist Adam Oliver apparently saw many of you asking for an explanation on the ring around the sun, so he took to social media to explain what was going on.

What Causes A Ring Around The Sun

According to Adam's post, "Amazing sun halo right now as high level cirrus clouds refract the light, acting as a prism and splitting the white light into the colors of the rainbow!"

So yes, clouds very high up played a significant role in the halo, and the photos we saw on social media were gorgeous. Take a look at a few here.

Our friend Jobie Lagrange, who is now the Chief Meteorologist at KALB-TV in Alexandria, also captured a photo of the gorgeous halo or ring around the sun.

Here's a look at a similar halo around the sun from a few days back. What a beauty, as many of these were taken on Easter Sunday.
