You don't see this every day.

A ring with rainbow colors circled the sun today, around midday, over south Louisiana and it was gorgeous.

Many were quick to notice the ring around the sun and some were even left to ask why the ring was even present around the sun today.

According to Rob Perillo over at KATC TV-3,  "The cirrus clouds, comprised of ice crystals (it's 30-40° below at that level,) act as tiny prims refracting the light to the colors of the rainbow, albeit sometimes not as brilliant...and from our perspective on the earth it creates a halo effect."

So, as it turns out, ice crystals in the clouds were present at the time and the sunlight was reflecting off of the crystals.

I have seen this type of ring appear many times around the moon, but rarely around the sun. Still, it is the same phenomenon.

It was pretty cool to see, but as the day went on and as clouds started to clear over south Louisiana, the ring slowly faded.
