Louisiana Parents Need to Have This Conversation With Their Kids

Parents in Louisiana need to put the devices down and have this serious conversation with their kids.

Life is busy in the 21st century and we are all distracted by many elements in society, but it is time to slow down and parent our kids.

Sure, it is easier said than done, but we may have reached a point in society where we, the parents, have let our kids down all because of a lack of communication.

One of the most important things a parent can do with or for their kids is to sit down with them and listen. In addition to that, as parents, we have the responsibility to educate our kids on various issues and topics.

A recurring story that you may see here and on television is the arrest of students after they allegedly threaten a school. Too often kids are being detained by authorities because they either made the threat themselves or they shared something on social media that they came across.

Because of the recent tragedies on campuses across our country, authorities take every threat seriously and I applaud them for that. You would hate for any threat to be ignored or downplayed and something bad happen, thus that is why police are investigating every threat and holding those responsible for the threats to schools.

As parents, it is time we all sit down with our kids and educate them on the severity of threatening a school or campus. If you aren't aware, there are some very serious consequences for threatening a school, and many kids are learning about this the hard way.

So, to the moms and dads out there, I encourage you to sit down with your kids and tell them how serious it is to threaten a school campus and remind them to always report what they may see or come across on social media. Every threat is serious these days.

I have had this conversation with my kids several times, and I will continue to remind them that making a threat is "no game." We must instill in our kids that threatening a school campus is a serious matter and we must also be honest with them when outlining the consequences.

Way too many kids in South Louisiana have been removed from campuses over threats they allegedly made, and sadly, those making the threat may often deem the threat as a "joke."

Having this conversation about threats in schools with your kids may save you and them a lot of headaches and heartaches in the future.

To those with kids in school, it's past time we "parent" our kids.
