More Parents Are Admitting They Can’t Help Kids With Homework
(Lafayette, Louisiana) - The school year is now in full swing, and the homework assignments for kids seem to be getting more complicated by the week.
I recently told a story on air about how we are struggling to help our second-grade student with math at home, and after I shared it, more parents messaged me to admit they can't help their kids with the assignments.
No, it's not because parents are uneducated or lazy; we just do not know how things are taught in schools in 2026.
There was once a time when 10 plus 10 simply equaled 20, but those days are long gone. Now it seems like you have to go through so many channels to get an answer, and, to be honest, we as parents have no idea how to find some of the answers now.
Sure, times change, and school curricula change, but have we reached a point where parents can no longer help their kids with their education? I think we have.
I recently spoke to a well-educated doctor, and she told me she can no longer help her daughter with her homework. She's even gone so far as to ask colleagues to help with a few things, and they can't help either.
The story that I told on-air was that I actually wrote a brief letter to my child's teacher explaining that we tried to solve a math problem, but because I never learned how to go through the steps they use now, I could not help my daughter, but we tried.
I'll say this too: this is NOT on the teachers. The state has mandated that a certain curriculum be taught in our schools, and now we are at the point where, as parents, we can't help our kids with after-school work.

Again, I know things and times change, so if you can't assist your kid with their homework, don't feel bad or embarrassed. Many of us can't now.
I will relay a message to you from a friend of mine who is a teacher: if your child's school offers after-school tutoring, take full advantage of it. She told me the teachers have a much quicker, easier way to address your child's concerns, which can help reduce stress and anxiety for you and your kids.
Lastly, I wrote this to share some encouraging words with you, and when you or your kid can't complete an assignment, do as I did. Try your best, and if you can't do the work, inform your child's teacher; he or she will never penalize a kid who is trying their best.
I wish you the best this school year.
