Millennials consider leaving a voicemail rude. I’m not sure I buy into that. My attitude is if it was important enough to call in the first place, leave a message and I’ll call you back. That being said, it doesn’t need to be a two-minute narrative.

Digital media and the proliferation of smartphone technology have necessitated new standards of etiquette. Victoria Turk is an editor at Wired UK, and author of “Kill Reply All: A Modern Guide to Online Etiquette, From Social Media to Work to Love.” She says we have forgotten old-fashioned rules of polite discourse.

I agree, to some extent. Turk says emailing or texting coworkers at night is just plain rude. I agree. “Reply all” is a no-no. I abhor group texts and group Facebook messages. Turk says putting periods at the end of sentences in a text is rude. I disagree. It must be my upbringing. I’m the son of a retired English teacher. There’s a bottom line here. Have some empathy for the person you’re communicating with.
