BATON ROUGE, La. - If you're an LSU fan wondering if the Tigers could actually get kicked out of the SEC, you're certainly not alone.
What started as a disagreement over college football eligibility has now turned into something much bigger.
According to a new report, SEC university leaders are discussing some serious options in response to LSU's decision to add former professional athletes to its roster. Those options reportedly include probation, a possible boycott of LSU games, legal action and, yes, potentially kicking LSU out of the SEC.

On Monday (8/31/26) according to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger -
"SEC school executives are exploring extreme measures to address LSU’s plans to add former pro players, including boycotting competition, sanctioning the school with probation or expulsion and filing a federal legal challenge."
The current situation involves SEC school leaders discussing possible responses to LSU adding former NFL players to their roster under the "5-for-5" rule. The discussions are reportedly still in the early stages, and there has been no final decision on whether the SEC will take action against LSU.

With LSU scheduled to open the 2026 football season against Clemson on Saturday, September 5, the timing couldn't be more dramatic.
Why Is The SEC So Angry With LSU?
The controversy centers around LSU's decision to add players who have previously been involved with professional football after court rulings opened the door for certain former professional athletes to return to college sports.
LSU took advantage of that opening, with former NFL players including Dae'Quan Wright joining the Tigers.
In response, the SEC quickly adopted a rule prohibiting SEC schools from bringing back athletes who had previously signed pro contracts, been on professional rosters, or declared for the NFL draft.
A Louisiana Court Ruling Changed Everything
A Baton Rouge judge issued a temporary restraining order blocking the SEC from enforcing its new rule against LSU while the legal battle continues. LSU is saying they now have a court order allowing them to do something the SEC says violates conference rules.

Can The SEC Really Kick LSU Out?
Under the SEC's published bylaws, involuntary termination of membership requires a two-thirds vote of the conference's chief executive officers. The SEC currently has 16 schools, so a two-thirds vote to kick LSU out of the SEC is technically possible, but not realistically probable.
In other words, kicking LSU out isn't something the SEC commissioner can just do on his own.
And, let's be honest. The SEC benefits tremendously from having LSU as a member. That's why the idea of simply replacing LSU with another school is easier said than done.
LSU is part of the fabric of the SEC.
