September is National Hunger Month. It's both a time of reflection and a time of action. This month is also known as Hunger Action Month.

This is a time for everyone to focus on the work of a network of food pantries across the country who work to try to make sure no one in America goes hungry.

This month, Rouse's, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Townsquare Media are teaming up to ask anyone who can donate, to please donate non-perishable food items and/or donate money to help buy food for those who are struggling with food insecurity.

It is terrible to think, but it is a fact that one in every five children struggles with hunger. This year, the Louisiana Legislature passed a bill with bipartisan support that allows more money to pay for students' meals at school.

The measure will make it possible for 14,000 more children to be able to access free food at school this year. The man who sponsored the legislation, Representative Kyle Green, says for the upcoming legislative session he plans to sponsor a bill that would expand the program to include all students in the state of Louisiana.

When you visit any Rouse's store, you can see they have paper bags already full of non-perishable items for purchase. You can purchase one of those and place it in the basket for Second Harvest. You can also buy your own items and put them in the Second Harvest basket at the stores.

If you prefer, you can make a donation to Second Harvest that is either a one-time donation or a recurring donation. Did you know that 49 million people last year turned to a food program to be able to avoid hunger?
