In the days before the arrival of Hurricane Laura in Southwest  Louisiana, we had discussions at our house about the purchase of a generator. I am sure many households that did not have a generator shared similar conversations. Most of us felt pretty sure the storm would be strong enough to knock out power and we wanted to be ready.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency or FEMA as most of us know the agency has announced that some equipment purchases and equipment rentals made to aid residents during and after the storm could be eligible for reimbursement. If the equipment was not paid for by another source such as a homeowner's policy, flood insurance policy, or any other type of insurance policy.

As you might imagine there are a few hoops you'll have to jump through in order to get your money but it certainly would be worth the effort. Here's basically what you'll need to do.

If you purchased or rented equipment anytime within 30 days of August 22nd. That's the day FEMA is declaring as the start date of this particular disaster incident. You may apply for reimbursement. You must first, register with FEMA on this website. If you don't have a computer you may download the FEMA App for your smartphone or call 1-800-621-3362

Here are the general guidelines for what you'll need to do next. These guidelines were chronicled and originally published by KLFY Television.

  • The applicant meets the general eligibility requirements for FEMA’s Individuals and Households Program.
  • The home is the applicant’s primary residence and is located in a parish designated for the Individuals and Households Program. As of Sept. 8, designated parishes are Acadia, Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Grant, Jackson, Jefferson Davis, Lincoln, Morehouse, Natchitoches, Ouachita, Rapides, Sabine, Union, Vermilion, Vernon, and Winn.
  • The generator was purchased or rented due to a disruption in electrical utility service caused by Hurricane Laura.
  • Proof-of-purchase or rental receipts for the items are submitted by the applicant.

The maximum amount FEMA will reimburse for generators is $449.00 and $179.99 for chainsaws. Other items that are eligible for reimbursement from FEMA include carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, dehumidifiers, and weather radios.
