A rare baby monkey came into the world in Baton Rouge last Wednesday, a sign of hope for its species.

WBRZ reports that the Baton Rouge announced the birth of the new golden lion tamarin monkey earlier today.

The newborn monkey is on exhibit with its parents, all of which are on loan to the Baton Rouge Zoo from the Brazilian government. The newborn marks the first of its kind born at the zoo in 6 years.

The golden lion tamarin monkey is unfortunately among those animals on the endangered list of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) because of the eradication of almost all of the Atlantic coast’s forests.
