Weekend Crash Involving Calcasieu Sheriff’s Deputy Kills One

A crash early Saturday morning involving a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Deputy and another vehicle has left one person dead. The crash happened at the intersection of LA 12 and LA 109 in Starks.

According to preliminary reports, the CPSO Unit was traveling East on LA 12 when the driver of a 2007 Ford pickup truck failed to yield at the stop sign. The vehicle then entered the intersection in the path of the deputy's vehicle.

State Police have identified the deceased as Paula R. Breaux Ortego. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The CPSO deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment of what was described as minor injuries.

State Troopers called to investigate the crash say routine toxicology samples were taken from both drivers. The crash remains under investigation.
