New Orleans City Councilman Jared Brossett was arrested Sunday morning with a DWI charge. According to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, Brossett was booked and released on bond for driving while drunk. He was also booked for reckless driving.

According to Nola.com, a local resident was sitting on his porch facing the Interstate 10 West on-ramp, when he witnessed the accident.  He saw the black SUV with police lights on it jump the avenue’s wide median and smashed into an oncoming car just before midnight on Saturday.

After the wreck, the resident videoed the aftermath. He crossed the street and found Brossett, whom he did not immediately recognize. The resident didn’t know who he was until someone passing by who offered to help identified Brossett as a city councilman. The resident, who does not want to be identified, noticed the unidentified man Brossett hit lying on the ground.

Emergency officials arrived around 30 minutes after the crash and police responded about an hour later, according to the resident. In the video, Brossett is heard stumbling over his words saying.

According to Nola.com, Brossett refused a breath-alcohol test and he performed poorly on the field sobriety test. At approximately 6 am, Brossett was booked into the Orleans Parish jail on counts of driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. Within a couple of hours, he was released.

Brossett, 37, was elected to the New Orleans City Council in February 2014 to District D. He was re-elected in 2017.
