125 years at the center of Acadiana Culture

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette was founded in 1898 as the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute. It changed its name many times, finally becoming UL Lafayette in 1999. Its founding aimed to offer practical skills to those living in the Acadiana region and focused on farming and mechanical arts. Today, it thrives with a diverse selection of academic programs and a vibrant student life. It is designated an R1 university by the Carnegie Institute based on the level of research it does on campus. It's also home to the Center for Louisiana Studies, preserving the state's rich heritage along with extensive research of Cajun and Creole cultures. UL Lafayette's Rajun' Cajuns athletics teams, known for their competitive spirit, contribute to the university's trademark "cULture".
