Tax season is here and the scammers are cranking it up. Officials with the United States Treasury Department are warning taxpayers about an aggressive phone scam. Callers pretending to be IRS agents call taxpayers and threaten them with jail if they don't pay up immediately. ABC News reports more than 5,000 victims have been fleeced for more than 26 million dollars since 2013. Timothy Camus with the Treasury Department told ABC, the IRS doesn't call out of the blue. The first contact is by mail. He also states the first contact will not contain threats. Camus advises hanging up, and filing a report at www.tigta.gov.
