Louisiana State Police is giving us a clear and detailed look at the fatal wreck on I-10 at the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge.

The accident happened on Monday, and after a preliminary investigation, State Police say that an initial crash caused westbound traffic to slow down which then caused a chain-reaction crash that involved more 18-wheelers and "several passenger vehicles."

Motorists shared photos and videos of the fiery wreckage on social media as the interstate was shut down in both directions. Eventually, the eastbound lanes were open but as of tonight, I-10 westbound is still closed while crews work through the night to remove debris.

According to stats provided by the state Department of Transportation and Development the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge has seen over 1,000 accidents over the last 5 years with 13 fatalities.

Lawmakers say it's too soon for any type of legislation, but it seems like conversations have already been initiated on how to make this notorious stretch of I-10 safer for motorists who travel along the bridge.
