(Lafayette, Louisiana) - The kids are out of school, and the summer months mean everyone is on the move.

Remember when we were kids and out of school for the summer? We'd stay up late and look for things to do. We played video games and even participated in some friendly competition outdoors. However, some kids chose to engage in more mischievous activities.

Like us, kids today often get bored at night, staying awake late into the night, and they will usually roam the streets in their neighborhood looking for things to do. Unfortunately, some individuals choose to engage in activities that can put them at risk or cause harm, which is why we are reminding you to take precautions to protect your property this summer.

We all live fast-paced lives now, and it's easy to forget to do the simplest things, like locking the doors of your vehicle when you exit it.

Yes, kids still pull on the doors of vehicles to see if they are unlocked, and if they are, the temptation to enter the car and steal what is inside is apparent. Never leave valuable items inside your vehicle, such as phones or guns, and always remember to lock your doors upon exiting your automobile or truck.

Too often, crimes are committed across Louisiana with guns that are stolen from unlocked vehicles. So, please take it easy this summer and protect your property.

We've already seen police agencies in Acadiana warn citizens that teens are on the move at night, and kids have only been out of school for a few days, so lock and protect your vehicles.

It is also recommended that you park in well-lit areas, whether at home or while out in public. Light deters crime.

I hope that you'd consider sharing this friendly reminder with others on social media, as we never want anything you work for to go missing because you were in a hurry to exit a car or truck.

Yes, kids will be kids, but let's do our part to discourage criminal behavior this summer in Acadiana.

If you suspect anyone is in your neighborhood at night, looking to bring into vehicles this summer, you should notify authorities and request that they patrol in your area. It's perfectly fine to be observant and proactive in your community.
