Here’s Why Mushrooms Are Showing Up in Yards Across Louisiana
If you drive through your city or neighborhood in south Louisiana you will likely notice that many of the lawns have mushrooms growing in them.
So, why are there so many mushrooms showing up in yards in recent weeks, well it turns out it has a lot to do with the recent weather conditions.
The mushrooms are a type of fungi, that seem to sprout out of nowhere, and many of us see them as an "eye sore" in our yard, even though kids love to pick or destroy them.
Mushrooms often show up in yards with plenty of shade or in areas of the yard that do not get much sunlight throughout the day. In addition to that, moisture in your yard plays a huge role in mushrooms popping up during the summer months.
Louisiana has been fortunate this summer to have received plenty of rainfall, thus the soil in your yard is moist, and this allows the growth of mushrooms to thrive in your yard.
And while the mushrooms may not be so attractive in your yard, they do play a vital role in the ecosystem of your yard. If you see mushrooms growing in your yard, it's a good indication that the soil in your yard is suitable for good growth.
As for eating them, well many mushrooms can be poisonous so it's best for you to not consume them or allow your pets to eat them. If you see a mushroom in your yard, just assume it can be a risk to your health, and move on from eating it.
So, until it dries up in Louisiana, we will continue to see mushrooms pop up in yards, and the kids will continue to enjoy kicking and picking them.
