A baby has been in the hospital for weeks now, after authorities say an Opelousas man is responsible for harming the child.

The St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office reports that 22-year-old Benjamin Baquet of Opelousas has now been arrested for second degree cruelty to a juvenile after a baby was shaken.

The physician at the hospital says the child suffered from "Shaken Baby" syndrome.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office Spokesman Major Eddie Thibodeaux says the child suffered many injuries including the following:

  • A right broken clavicle
  • Bruises
  • Respiratory arrest
  • Diffuse cerebral
  • Hemorrhages
  • Bleeding on the brain
  • Non-accidental trauma to the child

Baquet was arrested after the mother of the infant and two social workers says that Baquet admitted to them that he shook the infant when the child wouldn't stop crying.

The baby has been hospitalized since the shaking incident on July 9.
