LSU Tiger Stadium Lit Blue To Honor Baton Rouge Officers Killed

(Baton Rouge, Louisiana)- LSU's Tiger Stadium was lit up Friday night, and it was not in purple and yellow.

If you were driving along I-10 through Baton Rouge on Friday night, or near the campus of LSU, you probably noticed that the stadium was lit up in blue.

No, it was not a mistake that the iconic college football stadium was lit up in blue weeks before LSU opens up its 2026 football season.

LSU Tiger Stadium was lit up in blue on Friday, July 17, 2006, to honor the fallen officers with the Baton Rouge Police Department.

Baton Rouge Police Officers Killed

Ten years ago, officers were ambushed by a suspect when they responded to a man carrying a gun. Sadly, Corporal Montrell Jackson, Deputy Brad Garafola, Officer Matthew Gerald, and, later, Sergeant Nick Tullier died as a result of their injuries in the shooting.

Some say that this was the saddest day in Baton Rouge history, and on July 17, 2026, officers, citizens, and the families of those fallen officers walked from the BRPD headquarters to where the shooting happened.

Knowing that, LSU elected to honor those Baton Rouge officers ten years later to the date of the shooting by lighting up the stadium in blue.
