According to the DOE, Louisiana student performance improved in social studies and remained steady in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics on last school year's LEAP tests.

Students and schools demonstrated reasonable improvement in the first year of the state's plan to comply with the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). the release said.

Here in Lafayette Parish, in particular, school district officials reported strong gains throughout the parish.

Tom Spencer, LPSS Director of Accountability, said even with the new ESSA mandates students showed gains in almost every subject within the testing parameters.
