This morning just before 2:30, Louisiana State Police troopers were called out to the scene of crash involving a pedestrian on Highway 700 north of Pershing Road in Vermilion Parish.

The crash took the life of 25-year-old Jeremy J. Little of Kaplan.

The initial investigation by State Police showed that the crash happened as Little was walking in the southbound lane of the highway.  At the same time, 31-year-old Charles Milton of Sunset was driving a 2004 Dodge Ram southbound on Highway 700.

Troopers say Little was wearing dark clothing, and there were no street lights in the area where he was walking.

Little was struck in the southbound lane by Milton’s Dodge, and he sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash.

Routine toxicology tests are pending.  Milton was cited for having an expired license plate and operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license.

Troopers say crashes involving pedestrians can often be avoided by following some basic safety guidelines.

Pedestrians should:

  • Wear light-colored or reflective clothing
  • They should always avoid walking on the roadway in dark areas
  • They must also assume that approaching motorists cannot see them, especially at night
  • They should cross roadways only in well-lit, designated areas and always walking facing traffic will enhance the safety for pedestrians
