LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL News) - One man is hospitalized after he was struck by a car on the Evangeline Thruway on Wednesday night. The Lafayette Police Department is currently on scene.

According to LPD Lt. Jace Quebedeaux, at around 8:30 p.m., the man, who was on a bike, attempted to cross the roadway when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

"While the bicyclist was attempting to cross the NW Evangeline Thruway westbound, a vehicle traveling southbound in the middle lane of the NW Evangeline Thruway impacted the bicyclist," Quebedeaux said. "The male bicyclist was transported to a local hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle reported no injuries on scene."

The 2100 block of NW Evangeline Thruway is between the I-10 exit and Chalmette Drive. As of 10:15 p.m., the LPD traffic division was still on the scene and drivers were being told to avoid that area as the southbound lanes are currently closed.

The victim in the crash has not been identified, and his status is listed as critical.
