The Memorial Day Weekend turned deadly in Grand Isle, Louisiana mid-afternoon on Saturday as a 13-year-old boy drowned at a beach there.

According to Grand Isle Police Chief Scooter Resweber, it happened right behind the Bridge Side Marina around 2:45 pm.

Resweber said that at the time of the incident, winds were blowing from 12 to 15 mph and a high tide was reported.

WWL-TV out of New Orleans reported that someone jumped in and tried to rescue the boy.

"His uncle was on the rocks, hollering for help," Brock Pellerin told WWL reporter Rachel Handley. "A couple of my friends went out there to help, by the time they got there, the tide was too strong for them to get the boy," he continued.

Pellerin said the boy was about 15 feet or so past the rock jetties.

"I don't blame the parents. I don't blame the children. They are attracted to the waves," Chief Resweber told reporters.
