Lafayette Police say the body of an "older male" was found floating in the Vermilion River late Tuesday night.

According to Sgt. Robin Green, the body found floating in the Vermilion River near Surrey Street on Tuesday night has been identified.

The body found in the Vermillion River yesterday evening has been identified as David Mayeaux 74, of Lafayette, LA.

Lafayette Police have ruled the incident as an accidental drowning.

ORIGINAL STORY:

According to Sgt. Robin Green with the Lafayette Police Department, authorities received a complaint around 8:25 p.m. about a body floating in the river. Upon their investigation, police found the body of an older white male in the Vermilion River near the Juvenile Detention Center.

Green says the identity of the man's death is currently unknown and the cause of death is pending an autopsy.

A KLFY report stated that all streets surrounding the Vermilion River area near Surrey Street were blocked off as police "combed the area" and "searched the waters with flashlights."

Investigators with the Lafayette Police Department are actively working the case and we will update this story when more information is made available.
