Louisiana Woman Still Recovering After $50K Cruise Nightmare

Millions of people watched the video. Thousands reacted, commented and shared their own stories. But while the viral attention surrounding a Louisiana woman’s horrific cruise accident may eventually fade, the reality of what happened has not gone away for Kirsten Lindsey and her boyfriend.

Lindsey suffered a severe groin injury during a shore excursion in Honduras while on what was supposed to be her first cruise, according to reports from KTAL.

The injury ultimately led to an emergency medical evacuation that her boyfriend, Blake Ford, said cost nearly $50,000.

Now, Lindsey continues to undergo medical treatment as she and her family deal with the physical, emotional and financial aftermath of the accident.

What Happened During The Honduras Rope Swing Accident?

According to Blake, the accident happened on the third day of a Carnival cruise while Lindsey was participating in a rope swing excursion.

Blake told KTAL that a retrieval line appeared to have been improperly connected to the swing. As Lindsey prepared to drop into the water, he said the line suddenly tightened between her legs, causing what he described as a catastrophic saddle injury.

At first, Lindsey reportedly believed she had suffered a relatively minor injury. However, her condition became increasingly painful and swollen in the hours that followed.

Her mother, Tara, told KTAL that Lindsey spent more than 12 hours in the ship’s medical center.

The couple reportedly paid approximately $4,000 out of pocket for medical treatment aboard the ship before facing another difficult decision about how to get Lindsey to additional care.

Emergency Medical Flight Reportedly Cost Nearly $50,000

According to Blake, the couple was given several options, including remaining in the ship’s medical facility, seeking treatment in Mexico and arranging their own transportation home, or paying for an emergency medical evacuation.

They chose the evacuation.

Blake said it cost approximately $20,000 to evacuate Lindsey from Costa Maya and another $30,000 to transport her back to the United States.

Lindsey was eventually transported by ambulance to an airport before boarding a private medical jet to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She was taken to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital, where KTAL reports she underwent her first surgery.

After returning to Louisiana, however, her medical ordeal continued.

Lindsey Readmitted To Louisiana Hospital

In a recent update shared on social media, Blake said Lindsey was being readmitted to CHRISTUS Highland Medical Center after another emergency room visit.

According to Blake, doctors were concerned by the severity of the injury and were working to prevent permanent damage.

Lindsey has continued undergoing treatment and additional procedures as part of what has become a much longer recovery than the couple could have imagined when they left for vacation.

The family is also dealing with medical expenses, travel costs and lost income associated with the accident.

Viral Video Prompts Others To Share Similar Injuries

Lindsey’s story quickly exploded online. KTAL reports that posts about the accident generated more than 5 million views across Facebook and TikTok in a single day.

But something unexpected also happened as the story spread.

Other people began sharing stories of similar accidents.

One woman claimed her son was injured on the same rope swing in Honduras, saying the impact with the water resulted in a damaged eardrum. Others described serious groin injuries involving rope swings, bicycles and trampolines.

The flood of stories has also sparked conversations about the potential dangers associated with certain excursion activities and what travelers should consider before leaving a cruise ship for an adventure on shore.

What Carnival Says About Shore Excursion Responsibility

Carnival’s current shore excursion terms state that excursions are operated by independent contractors. The cruise line says it does not supervise or control those tour operators and states that guests participate in off-ship activities at their own risk.

The company’s excursion information similarly says local independent companies operate shore excursions and related transportation.
