Pain Relief Ointment Recalled – Product Poses Danger to Children
(KMDL-FM) A popular pain relief ointment sold at Walmart and Target stores nationwide has been recalled over a potentially lethal issue with the packaging. That issue could be most deadly to children if not addressed promptly.
The reason for the recall has very little to do with the pain relief ointment itself. The main reason for this recall is that the product has been made available without the benefit of childproof or child-resistant packaging.

The concern is that the active ingredients in the product could pose a potential health threat to anyone if swallowed. Of course, the greatest risk would come from children who might not be able to read the packaging labels and could inadvertently put some of the product in their mouths.

How Many Jars of Ointment Were Recalled?
The distributors of the pain relief ointment say some 50,000 containers without the proper child safety features have been sold. As we mentioned, the product is available nationwide via Walmart and Target stores. The product is also available online through retailers such as Amazon. Here is what the product packaging looks like.

As you can see by the label on the container, the product contains lidocaine. Lidocaine is a numbing agent used in the treatment of symptoms of sore muscles or strains. Lidocaine can be poisonous if used improperly, in excessive amounts, or if absorbed by the bloodstream too quickly.
How Can Consumers Get a Replacement or Refund on the Recalled Ointment?
Consumers who currently have this product on hand are asked to place the container in a place that is out of reach of children. You may then contact Plantimex, the makers of Mamisan Pain-Relieving Topical Ointment, to receive a compliant child-safety lid for the container. Once the new child-safety lid has been installed, the product is safe for continued use.
The containers that did not have the child-safety lids were sold at Walmart and Target stores between April 2024 and October of this year. Only jars with the UPC 860006498115 are recalled.
