Louisiana’s Most Alligator-Infested Lakes
With so many great lakes and bayous around Louisiana, you're bound to run into an alligator at some point. But, which Louisiana lakes have the most alligators?
Louisiana's Most Alligator-Infested Lakes
With a population of over 2 million, Louisiana is home to the largest alligator population in the world.
Alligators have to live somewhere, so where are you likely to find most of them?
In addition to lakes, you'll find alligators in most of our bayous and swamps.
From A-Z-Animals.com -
"Alligators live in and around water including swamps, marshes, bayous, canals, rivers, and lakes. In Louisiana, most of the alligators live along the coast in the marsh areas.
They are mostly freshwater animals but can tolerate salt water so the brackish water along the coast is a fine environment for them."
While most alligators live along Louisiana's coast, there are a few alligator-infested lakes where you're going to want to keep a sharp eye out.
A-Z-Animals.com did the research and dubbed the following Louisiana lakes as the most alligator-infested in the state. You can read more at A-Z-Animals.com.
1. Lake Martin - Located in the Cypress Island Nature Preserve in St. Martin Parish. Lake Martin is home to numerous forms of wildlife like frogs, turtles, birds, fish, and plenty of alligators.
You'll also find quite a few nutria scampering around at Lake Martin and alligators love to snack on nutria.
2. Caddo Lake - Located in Caddo Parish, we share Caddo Lake with Texas. Caddo Lake is massive, coming at 26,810 acres. This is also arguably the most alligator-infested lake in Louisiana.
We're talking big alligators too, some weighing up to 1,000 lbs.
If you want to avoid alligators, then Caddo Lake probably isn't for you.
3. Cross Lake - Cross Lake is located near Shreveport is covers a sprawling 8,960 acres.
There are plenty of great swimming spots as the alligators usually stay around the bayous and canals.
However, it's not advised that you go swimming at night.
